Craniosacral therapy was developed in the 1970’s by an osteopathic physician and surgeon, John E. Upledger. It is a very soft-touch, hands-on approach that helps release restrictions and congestion in the craniosacral system by listening to the body rhythms and tissues. The craniosacral system consists of the membranes and fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. It extends from the bones of the skull, face and mouth, down to the sacrum. The physiological parts of the craniosacral system include the nervous, musculoskeletal, vascular, lymphatic, endocrine and respiratory systems. An abnormality in one of these systems may affect the craniosacral system. Cranioscral therapy is effective in treating multiple dysfunctions because of the close link with the other body systems.
Craniosacral therapy is a gentle method of detection and correction that encourages your body’s own natural healing processes. It also allows for better overall health and resistance to disease. It has been found to help with a multitude of pain and dysfunction. Some of these include: Migraines and headaches, chronic neck and back pain, motor-coordination impairments, stress and tension-related problems, infantile disorders, traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries, chronic fatigue, scoliosis, central nervous system disorders, emotional difficulties, temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ), learning disabilities, post-traumatic stress disorder, orthopedic problems, and many more.
You can contact your physician to get a script for an evaluation with us specifically for a physical therapy craniosacral assessment. It is usually covered under most insurances. Laura Bray-Prescott, a licensed physical therapist at our New Castle facility, has been trained through level 3 Craniosacral work and has been practicing the techniques since 1997. The office number there is (765)529-2924 to schedule an appointment, or if you have further questions. |
